Chemical Energy: Activity One

For our first activity to learn more about chemical energy we are going to observe what happens to a plastic film canister when we combine vinegar and baking soda inside.

In your science notebooks, be sure to record:

  1. The materials we will be using (you can draw pictures if you like)
  2. The procedure we followed for the activity
  3. Your prediction for what will happen
  4. Your observations
  5. What worked, what could work better and what you learned from the experiment

Materials:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Plastic Film Canister
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (not shown)
  • Safety Goggles (not shown)

Procedure:
*Make sure you are wearing safety goggles*
  1. Measure and cut a 3cm square of aluminum foil
  2. Fill the film canister 2/3 full of vinegar
  3. Fill the aluminum foil "boat" with baking soda
  4. GENTLY AND CAREFULLY place the "boat" with baking soda in the film canister so it's floating on top.
  5. Put the lid on the film canister.  Make sure it's sealed and secure on the canister.
  6. Flip the film canister over and give it two shakes then place it right side up on the table. Stand back from the film canister after placing it back on the table.
  7. Observe what happens.  Did it match your prediction?  Record you observations and notes in your science notebook.

Fill the film canister 2/3 full of vinegar
Shape the aluminum foil square into a "boat"
Fill the "boat" with baking soda
Flip the canister over, give it one quick shake and place in back on the table
